Slip Clutch Torque Limiter

A slip clutch or torque limiter is a mechanical device that limits the amount of torque that gear can be subjected to. Typically, the torque limiter will use a spring to hold the drive pawl against a notch in the rotor. As the drive shaft slips, the excess torque is dissipated in the form of heat. Slip clutches do not need to be reset when they are set to limit torque.

A friction torque limiter, on the other hand, requires sensors and a means to stop a load from over-torque. These devices are often susceptible to damage from over-torque events. Torque limiters can be installed in a number of formats, including on a hub or between a driven shaft and a bearing-supported component. Using a torque limiter on a gear can protect your gear train, as well as your machinery and personnel.

Torque limiters provide dependable torque control and overload protection. They are usually equipped with one or more friction discs mounted on an inner hub. A single nut allows you to adjust the clutch’s setting and transmit the torque.

When a tractor’s front PTO becomes too strained, it is essential to install a PTO torque limiter. These devices will slip out of place when the implement’s torque exceeds the PTO’s maximum horsepower. Then, the PTO will not be overloaded, thereby saving the front PTO. Torque limiters are usually installed on tractors with 540rpm gearboxes.

A torque limiter can be in the form of a friction-disc device. This type of torque limiter requires sensors and a means to stop the overload condition. The disadvantage of friction torque limiters is that they are susceptible to damage. Torque limiters come in different formats, including those that mount a sprocket, pulley, or sheave.
